Empowering Communities: OHAA Launches Certified Oral Health Promoter Training Program

The Oral Health Association of Australia (OHAA) has launched its Certified Oral Health Promoter Training Program—a ground-breaking initiative to tackle Australia’s preventable oral health crisis. With dental caries and gum disease among the most common yet avoidable chronic conditions, this program empowers community leaders to promote better oral health where it is needed most.

Why Oral Health Matters

Poor oral health affects nearly 40% of Australians, increasing risks of heart disease, diabetes, and reduced quality of life. Alarmingly, over 30% of adults delay dental care due to cost or lack of awareness. “Many Australians aren’t aware of just how preventable oral diseases are,” says Ms. Cheryl Dey, OHAA President. “By training certified promoters—teachers, health workers, and community advocates—we are bridging the gap between knowledge and action.”

Program Highlights

  • Flexible & Free: Fully online, self-paced (10 hours total), covering 11 key oral health messages—from sugar reduction to effective brushing.
  • Who Can Join: Open to health professionals, educators, social workers, and more.
  • Certification: Graduates receive a three-year credential, renewable via OHAA associate membership, with ongoing access to updated resources.

A Call to Action for Dental Health Week 2025

Led by the Australian Dental Association, this annual campaign (5-11 August 2025) raises awareness about oral health’s critical role in overall wellbeing. This year’s theme “Help Kids Reach Every Smilestone” highlights the lifelong benefits of early prevention.  “Just one trained promoter can reach hundreds—teaching kids healthy habits, guiding parents to affordable care, or explaining the risks of poor oral hygiene,” adds Ms. Dey.  Learn more: teeth.org.au/dental-health-week.
