Oral Health Promoter

Purpose of the Program

To build capacity for oral health promotion activities in the community by providing training and certification to the community.

Individuals who have successfully completed the training program, assessment and certification will demonstrate competence in promoting oral health to the Australian community via the 11 consensus oral health messages released by the Australian Dental Association and supported by most relevant oral health and dental organisations in the country.

Learning Objectives

To support individuals in demonstrating competence in oral health promotion to Australians with up to date and relevant knowledge. This will allow the individual to:

  • describe the importance of oral health in general health and well-being,
  • list and deliver the 11 consensus oral health messages to the community, and
  • direct the public to relevant oral health and dental practitioners and services.

Delivery Method

The program is delivered fully online. It is designed to suit individuals who are working and as such, provides a high level of flexibility mainly through pre-recorded videos and self-directed learning activities that can be completed anytime.

Program Study Commitment

The program is designed for individuals to study at their own pace, with flexibility to accommodate work and personal commitments. The following time allocations are recommended:

Watch introductory video 45 minutes
Activity 1 - Sugars and dental caries 1 hour
Activity 2 - Toothbrushing 15 minutes
Activity 3 - Plaque removal 20 minutes
Activity 4 - Smoking and vaping 15 minutes
Activity 5 - Presentation techniques 1 hour
Activity 6 - Public dental services 30 minutes
Activity 7 - Key information regarding oral health 1-2 hours
Revision 1 hour
Online assessment - MCQ and video submission
Total Time Allocation 10 hours (approximate)

Upon successfully completing the assessments and the course completion survey, a certificate of achievement will be awarded.

Eligibility

This program is available to individuals from any of the following groups:

  • Registered health professionals (other than dental practitioners)
  • Dental assistants who have completed a Certificate in Dental Assisting
  • Teachers and early childhood educators
  • Social workers
  • Community health workers
  • members of the public who hold a current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
  • other relevant community and allied health students and professionals

Enrolment & Access

Current OHAA members can access the training program via the link below when logged in.

If you are not an OHAA member, to enrol in this program, please join OHAA as an Associate Member. There are no other charges except for the OHAA associate membership fee. 

As an Associate Member you will be able to access the learning modules and any related resources to support you as a certified Oral Health Promoter.

As a certified OHAA Oral Health Promoter, you must have access to the latest resources and up to date information. You must therefore continue to be an OHAA Associate Member and seek certification every three years.
