Session details

"....it's not really a safe place, is it?"- Towards Culturally Safe dental care -Eliza Collins
Drawing on data collected in collaboration with Aboriginal communities in Northeast Arnhem Land and regional Victoria, this presentation examines Culturally Safe dental practice, its significance, and pathways for practical implementation.

To Cut or Not to Cut: Navigating Surgical vs. Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy - Dr Ahmed El-Hadidi
This presentation explores the critical clinical thresholds that dictate the transition from foundational non- surgical debridement to advanced surgical intervention. By examining defect morphology and unyielding pocket depths, we will establish an evidence-based framework for determining when direct access is clinically mandated.

The session provides a clear, practical decision matrix to optimize patient outcomes while preserving tissue architecture.

Aesthetic and Functional Considerations in Implant Emergence Profile Design - Dr Kenny Chong
This lecture will explore the importance of emergence profile design in implant-supported restorations and its influence on peri-implant tissue health, aesthetics, cleans ability, and long-term maintenance. The emergence profile refers to the contour transition from the implant platform to the final crown and plays acritical role in supporting healthy soft tissues and facilitating effective oral hygiene.

Key concepts including critical and subcritical contour design, tissue management, and the impact of restorative contours on plaque control and peri-implant disease risk will be discussed. The lecture will also highlight how customised abutments, provisional restorations, and digital workflows contribute to improved restorative outcomes and soft tissue stability.

Special Needs Dentistry at the Crossroads: Challenges, Barriers, and Pathways forward - Dr Hajer Derbi and Marwa Mustafa

Special needs dentistry plays a critical role in delivering equitable oral healthcare, yet it remains at a crossroads. Increasing patient complexity, workforce limitations, and systemic barriers continue to restrict access and continuity of care. Oral health therapists and dental professionals often face challenges in navigating behavioural, medical, and social factors that shape treatment outcomes. This presentation explores the key obstacles impacting care delivery and highlights opportunities to strengthen services, improve accessibility, and support the workforce. Moving forward requires not only clinical expertise, but coordinated, inclusive, and sustainable approaches to ensure patients with special needs receive the care they deserve.
