Webinar - Special Needs SIG - The Transition from Paediatrics to Special Needs Dentistry

Join us for a 1 hour online webinar courtesy of the Special Needs Dentistry SIG.

Transition is the purposeful, planned movement of adolescents and young adults with special health care needs from child centred to adult orientated health care systems. This stage poses great change:including from education to work, care and residential arrangements, changes in personal development, self-perception, and relationships with other adults. The dental home may also change from school or paediatric specialist care to the adult services, and successful dental care transition involves consideration of the context of their other lifestyle transitions.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Social Factors: transitioning from childhood to adulthood, how adult care is different, challenges with transition, involving carers vs parents, and decision-making and consent.
  • Clinical Factors: the accumulation of comorbidities and complexity, treatment planning for the longer term, oral care plans
