Lecture Synopsis:
Buccal Soft Tissue Dehiscence around implants - A.Prof Medhi Valizadeh
With the universal, long-term, and rapidly expanding use of dental implants, there has been a substantial increase in implant-related complications. A significant subset of these complications is associated with aesthetic concerns, most commonly arising from peri-implant mucosal recession. These recessions are, in the majority of cases, non-inflammatory and non-infectious in nature, yet they are sometimes misdiagnosed as peri-implant disease.
Over the last decade, increasing attention has been directed toward the diagnosis and management of these mucosal recessions, commonly referred to as BUCCAL SOFT TISSUE DEHISCENCE (BSTD). The diagnostic criteria and management strategies for BSTD have been extensively discussed and documented in contemporary literature.
This lecture will focus on the diagnostic and etiologic factors associated with BSTD, its clinical relevance, and current management strategies.
Peri-implantitis; Preventative and therapeutic approach - A.Prof Medhi Valizadeh
Peri-implantitis diagnosis and management have become integral components of implant dentistry, particularly following the evolution of implant surfaces from machined to roughened designs. A substantial proportion of both clinical and preclinical research in implant dentistry has been dedicated to unraveling patient-related, site-related, implant-related, and surgery-related risk factors associated with peri-implant disease.
This growing body of evidence has significantly increased awareness of the importance of supportive implant therapy as a preventive measure. Nevertheless, a prevalence of peri-implantitis of up to 20% at the implant level has been reported. Unlike periodontal disease, the majority of peri-implantitis cases appear to respond poorly to non-surgical treatment modalities. Consequently, a range of surgical treatment approaches has been developed to address peri-implantitis.
This lecture will primarily focus on preventive strategies and will further elaborate on contemporary therapeutic and surgical management approaches for peri-implantitis.
Transition from Paeds to Special Needs Dentistry - Dr Jee-Yun Leung
Transition is the purposeful, planned movement of adolescents and young adults with special health care needs from child centred to adult orientated health care systems. This stage poses great change: including from education to work, care and residential arrangements, changes in personal development, self-perception, and relationships with other adults. The dental home may also change from school or paediatric specialist care to the adult services, and successful dental care transition involves consideration of the context of their other lifestyle transitions.
These lectures will explore:
- Social Factors: transitioning from childhood to adulthood, how adult care is different, challenges with transition, involving carers vs parents, and decision-making and consent.
- Clinical Factors: the accumulation of comorbidities and complexity, treatment planning for the longer term, oral care plans, case studies and resources
Pharmacology for the Emerging Profession - Dr Samuel Keitaanpaa
Provides an overview of the core pharmacology related to Oral Health Practitioners in Australia, the fundamentals for medicines scheduling and regulation to guide practice and future opportunities to meet Australia's needs.
